Recent decades have seen an unprecedented rise in life sentences, as well as changes in the way in which these sentences are being executed. Whereas previously, life sentences included the possibility of conditional release, nowadays life sentences are meant to last a lifetime. Academic publications on life sentences in the Netherlands have primary taken a legal approach, in which a social scientific / behavioral approaches have been neglected.

This pilot study aimed to shed light on prison experiences among (life) long detainees. In total, 7 life sentenced individuals and 7 long-term sentenced individuals residing in various Dutch prisons were interviewed. With this study, we seek attention for the exceptional behavioral condition among an understudied study population.
